Island Diaries

Island Life is a documentary project exploring everyday life, community, and the changing relationship between people and their natural environment on Rote Island, Indonesia. Once relatively isolated, the island introduced seaweed farming as a source of income for local families. Yet, limited access to equipment has led farmers to rely on improvised materials, including plastic bottles, raising concerns about pollution and damage to the surrounding marine ecosystem.

Despite this concern, I also wanted to capture the resourcefulness, resilience, and vibrant spirit of the people who live there. Island Life is a portrait of a community whose richness lies not simply in its surroundings, but in the connections and shared experiences that shape everyday life somewhere far away from a bustling city.
